From the Principal's Desk:

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven."  The season of school is ending with our grade 8 graduation celebration today, and we wrap up tomorrow at 12:25.  Congratulations to all for their hardwork over this school year!

For students, there will be a time to play, to learn new things in a different environment, and a time to spend more time with their families.  For staff it is a time of rest, but also a time to reflect on the past year and plan for the one to come.  As a staff, we will lay out next year's theme and how we want to weave it into our curriculum.  We will also attend training on the Mobi electronic classroom tablet, and a professional development course on Google Apps for Education in preparation for next Fall.  Throughout, we are thinking about how we will continue to build and shape Christian character in our students, as God guides and strengthens us.  Our curriculum, daily schedule and calendar all create the environment for this to happen.  Attached to the Journal, you will find a draft outline of next year's calendar, with the fine details to come in August.

Our office will be closed from the first week of July until the third week in August, though we will be available by appointment, and via email and telephone.  Should you know of anyone still deciding on enrolment for the Fall, it is never too late!  I will be pleased to speak with them at any convenient time.

God's blessings this summer,

//Keith Cameron//
Principal

The teachers' work does not finish when school is done - they are working at school on Fri 22 Jun, Mon 25 and Tue 26 Jun.  Why not encourage our teachers and complete a small maintenance task or two while you're here?  The Maint Committee invites all who have time and energy to drop in at the school and choose a job (list and materials will be in the office and janitor's room).  Odd jobs include exterior door repainting, goal and basketball net painting, touch-up painting on the playground, rubbish removal from the NW classroom, weeding in the playground, eavestrough cleaning, [anything else?].  In July, the maint ctte will take on several larger tasks including wall reconstruction in the primary hall, interior painting in the gym and halls, and urinal replacements in the sr boys washroom.  Thanks for any time you are able to share in this project!
T.R.I.P.:  You will be able to continue purchasing No Frills/Valumart and Tim Horton cards at Aunt Kelly’s Deli, Clovermead Apiaries, or Family Flowers throughout the summer or give Theressa DeJong (519-765-3372) or Grace Schipper (519-866-3731) a call.  We will have a limited number of other popular selling gift cards in stock, but we will need a bit of notice in order to make them available to you for pickup.

Library News:
Ø      Thank you to those who helped with Inventory.  We were able to go over all the shelves and check the status of our collection.  We found that some books are missing i.e., not on the shelves and not signed out to anyone.  If you find ICS books at home over the holidays, please send them back in September (books purchased from the book sale have the bar code removed and an X on the pocket.  We don't want those back!).
Ø      Bills were sent out to students who have lost or damaged books.  Please submit payment this week.
Ø      Summer Sign-out books need to be returned the first week of school.
Ø      Make time to READ this summer.  Visit your local public library and get involved in their Summer Reading Program.  Reading over the summer helps children keep up the skills they need to ease back into school in the fall.

From the Principal's Desk:

I would like to take this space to express sincere thanks to all in our community who volunteer their time, talents, finances and energy in service at ICS!

While our GIFTS program is an incentive for parents to get involved, many go well beyond the 'requirement', while we have many non-parent volunteers too! This past year, some of you have served faithfully on committees and/or the Board.  Some of you have helped in the forefront, and others have been very busy behind the scenes.  We have a number of people who come to work with students on a very regular basis, and there are others who have taken up the challenge of a particular, perhaps smaller, task.

You need to realize that every time you walk through the school doors or help on an Immanuel project, you have a positive impact on this community.  To each and every one of you, from the staff and students of Immanuel, THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS!!  We pray that we may have impacted your lives as much as you have impacted ours!  Consider letting us know what your plans are for the Fall - will you continue in your commitment, do you want a change?  We have committees to serve on, Ladies Auxiliary, adult reading buddies, morning yard duty cover, sports coaches, library, electives, classroom assistants, and many special events...

At year end, we also recognize student efforts.  You are all welcome to attend our Awards Assembly in the ICS gym on Mon 18 Jun at 2:15 PM.  Sports coaches, you are especially welcome to say a few words of congratulations to your sports teams during the assembly.  Hope to see you there!

blessings,

Memory Work: for Wed. June 20 review our theme songs, Here I Am, Lord and Teach Me Your Way.  Ccli # 1443206

Here I Am, Lord

I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save.
I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?  Whom shall I send?

Refrain:  Here I am, Lord.  Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people's pain.
I have wept for love of them. They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them.  Whom shall I send?
Refrain:

I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame;
I will set a feast for them. My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide till their hearts are satisfied.
I will give my life to them.  Whom shall I send?
Refrain:

Teach Me Your Way

Vs: Teach me your way, O Lord and I will walk in your truth
Give me an undivided heart that I may fear your name

Teach me your way, O Lord and I will walk in your truth
Give me an undivided heart that I may fear your name
Your name

Chorus: I will praise you, O Lord my God with all of my heart
I will glorify your name forever for great is your love toward me
You have delivered me from the depths of the grave

Teach me your way, O Lord. Teach me your way
Teach me your way, O Lord. Teach me your way
Teach me your way, O Lord. And I will walk in your truth
Give me an undivided heart that I may fear your name

Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal's Desk:
For these last few weeks before we break, there are always lots of things to highlight in this spot!  In case you have not been involved in all of them, let me give you the highlights:

-          Firstly, Track and Field was held under excellent weather conditions in Strathroy yesterday, and our children competed with determination and skill.  While we are awaiting the final school scores, we heard the Immanuel name being announced many times as a winner!  Several records were made during the course of the day, including Correy Mantel in the new event of standing triple jump!  Congratulations to all the Immanuel young athletes!

-          We had the pleasure of joining Grace Community Church at the Aylmer Legion for worship last Sunday.  We were excited about this "new" Christian education visit, and Pastor Randy Fehr spoke encouragingly about our work here at ICS.  We thank God for this opportunity to broaden ICS support, and to make new Christian connections in our community!

-          Last Wednesday, the Education Committee, assisted by our grade 8 class, ran our Hat and Gum day supporting Christian curriculum development (see http://www.canadianchristianeducation.org).  We raised just over $300 in spare change, and had a fun morning to boot!  Small, ongoing efforts like these reinforce our theme of Servants of the King, and cumulatively with other schools, the funds have been used to digitize the OACS and CSI curriculum materials for 21st century teaching and learning.

Please read the announcements elsewhere in the Journal regarding help for Graduation, and please take the time to volunteer your name.  I would also like to extend an invitation for our Awards Assembly at 2:15 PM on Monday June 18th.  Traditionally, we present only the grade 8 awards at graduation, so this is a special time of celebration for all.  It will run similar to a chapel, and if you are present, you could take your child home with you afterwards.

blessings,
//Keith Cameron//
Principal

GRADES 5 and 6 – Mrs. Drop

Memory Work:  Review of the books of the Old Testament.  Review the song at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixMvFdeo-F0
Math:  We are starting our final (!) mathematics unit on probability. As adults, we use ideas of probability in everyday life when we estimate the likelihood of risks and predict future events.  Many decisions, from carrying an umbrella to buying extra life insurance, are based on our understanding of probability.  Probability concepts can be practised at home as well as at school. Here are some suggestions for activities you can do at home:
  • Listen to weather forecasts with your child.  Use words such as likely, unlikely, probable, and possible to talk about the next day’s weather. Compare the actual weather to the forecast weather.  Help your child understand that meteorologists use past weather patterns to tell us what is probable, rather than certain, in the future.
  • Play board and card games with your child.  Compare games that depend on chance (for example, snakes and ladders) with games that depend on skill (for example, chess).  Look for games that combine chance and skill.
  • What does it mean to say that something happens by chance or is random?  Discuss how God used “random” events to influence history for His plan – the arrow in 2 Kings, the purim in Esther...  Probability is a fascinating and complex topic. Instead of just looking for “correct” answers, enjoy the opportunity to discover more about your child’s thinking as you explore these ideas together.
Spelling Dictation:  Review the words carefully for the dictation on Friday, June 5.
French:  There will be a vocabulary quiz from the unit, "Au Camp de Vacances" on Tues., June 12.  Practise the words on your vocabulary page.  We have been working on a French project in class.  It includes six French sentences and drawings.  Please complete it by Tues., June 12.
Science:   Review your notes and science textbook readings in preparation for the quiz on Fri., June 15.
Thank you to Mr. Cameron, Mrs. Friesen, Mr. Hartemink, Mrs. Rollins and Mrs. Ypma for helping out at our field trip to U.W.O.  We enjoyed the sports, games and presentation.  It was a wonderful day!
Creative Writing Contest:  Congratulations to Dyllon Bergen!  His story, entitled "Down to Texas", has been chosen as one of the top entries in the Canadian Schools Creative Writing Contest.  His story will go forward into the final competition to be judged in Fall 2012.  The story will be included in a collection of short stories (anthology) called The Wishing Well.
