NEW: Christian Schools Foundation (endowment): www.christianschoolfoundation.ca
From the Principal’s Desk:
Welcome to the (really warm) 2016-2017 school year! With your children, our building has once again come alive from the summer! Welcome to Mr Paul Bierman as he teaches our gr 7/8 homeroom and to Ms Karista Smeets teaching French and resource!

There’s a story that needs re-telling. Several years ago, as a board, we committed to being faithful to our Christian educational vision of excellence (being as good a Christian school as we could be) regardless of numbers. Our numbers were much smaller, but we committed to be good with whatever numbers God brought us! Our school theme this year is Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me” from Matthew 4:19, reminding us all to seek God’s will first. And, God has blessed us in bringing new families! We now have 134 full time students (58 families), plus 4 homeschool partnership students doing just selected programs (2 families).

Welcome to new families: Paul & Danielle Bierman (Vincent, Alana, Jolene), Peter & Susie Krahn (Marshall), Bill & Sara Loewen (Dawson, Gloria, Felicity), Dean & Cally Manning (Joshua, Wyatt), Jacob & Sarah Penner (Michael, Ryan), Justin & Megan Siemens (Andrew), Mike & Susie Wall (Kolbie, Renae, Marcus, Aron), Brian & Priscilla Ward (Everett, Sully, Felix), Gordon & Corinne Wells (Stewart) as well as two of Jake & Lydia Bergen’s foster children (Caelum, Tristan). Welcome as well to our 12 students starting JK! Our board vision calls us to “Inspire Christian community to sustain and prosper ICS, using the gifts with which God has blessed us” - together, let’s be intentional in getting to know each other, and becoming a people united by a passion for Christian education! Please introduce yourself, be friendly, and be involved! Come on out to the Back to School BBQ this Friday!

Yours in Christian education, Keith Cameron, Principal and Chief Operating Officer
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Phil 4:6). Each week, during staff devotions we join in prayer for our parents and staff members. We invite you to do so as well.
Praying for our parents: Please join us as we pray for Steve & Debbie Atkinson as well as Chris & Chantelle Bakker.
Praying for our staff: Please pray for our Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Sarah Penner
Farewell: to Isaac and Margaretha Dyck (Pancho, Johnny) who will be transferring to homeschool.

Tuition Reduction Incentive Plan (T.R.I.P): Orders are due Sept 15th with pickup on Sept 22nd.
What is TRIP? It is a fundraiser where you can earn money towards your next year’s tuition, this also includes families who have students at LDCSS (your tuition credit will be applied to transportation costs to LDCSS).
How does TRIP work? You purchase gift cards from the school: 40% of the profit goes towards reducing your tuition (or someone else’s), 50% goes to ICS Fundraising and the last 10% pays our coordinators. A good amount of 'TRIP credit' can be earned for individual families who diligently buy gift cards for all your shopping needs. Working to reduce tuition, we try to make the TRIP gift card program convenient for everyone!
How do we get started? If you do not have a TRIP number all you need to do is get a registration form from the office and fill it out. You will be given a TRIP number that you use when ordering. You can start buying cards the day you put in your registration form! Once you have a number, you may order online at: www.immanuelchristianschool.net/trip/
Where can I get the gift cards? Order online anytime! If you prefer paper, once a month a TRIP order form will be attached to the Journal. you will need to return it with your payment the next week. The order is due the next week - the date is printed on the form. The following week you will be able to pick up your gift cards at the school or if you choose you may have them sent home from the school with your child. You may still buy gift cards at the school on Tuesday mornings, or on Fridays all day (when the school is open). Other locations include Clovermead Apiaries, and Roszell’s Furnishings. These locations only carry President's Choice and Tim Horton’s gift cards. Family Flowers near St. Thomas carries a wider variety of gift cards.

Steps for ordering TRIP online
  1. Go to www.immanuelchristianschool.net/trip
  2. Click on ‘My Account’
  3. For your user name enter your 5 digit TRIP ID@immanuelchristianschool.net
(ie. 44007@immanuelchristianschool.net). If you don’t know your TRIP ID please contact Annette or Janina. If you have a four digit TRIP ID, use a zero as the first digit.
  1. Password is set up to be ‘icstrip2015’.   Once you have got into your account, please change your password for security purposes. If you would like to receive e-mail updates on your orders please change your email address to your personal one also.
  2. Click on ‘Store Home’ and shop for the gift cards you want. (Even if a gift card says there is none in stock, please order anyway so we can order them for you.)
  3. Once done shopping go into shopping cart to finish your order. Click on check out and follow check out steps (delivery options are still the same. Pick up from school or send home with your child). If you want it sent home, please put that in the comments section.
  4. Payment is due upon collection. Cash or cheque for now. We are looking into e-transfer and will let you know when we know more.
  5. Confirm order.
  6. Once your order is complete you can check on the status of your order by clicking on ‘order history’ under the ‘My Account’ tab. Once your order status says ‘Complete’ it is then ready for pick-up or delivery
We want to give a big thank-you to all who participated in the TRIP program last year! By selling gift cards, the school's portion of the return totalled just under $12,000! For those of you who don't use the TRIP program we want to encourage you to start! Using the TRIP program not only helps the school but it also helps you pay for your tuition. Our highest return towards someone's tuition last year is almost $500!
Don't forgot to grab your Clovermead Adventure Farm tickets through TRIP and save the tax. Go check out the new corn maze!! Contact us for more details. Annette Dykxhoorn 519-860-6332, Janina Dykxhoorn 519-709-6620 or trip@immanuelchristianschool.net.

Cheese orders: We would like to thank all our families and friends who have supported our cheese fundraiser throughout the years. Through your purchases, we were able to buy many books for our school library. We have decided to discontinue with this fundraiser to open the doors for new adventures. Spicer's, in Aylmer, is a great local place to go for all your Dutch cheese needs. We thank you again, and we are excited to see what the future holds for us.

Chocolate Bars: A tasty treat! Chocolate bar sales (we make $30/box) remain our main fundraiser for the Student Fund, helping with the costs of school skates, field trips, and co-curricular activities. It’s also a way of talking about our school! Each student sells a box of 30. Alternatively, parents may pay a student activity fee ($30/full time student, $15 / JK or SK part-time student). By Friday morning, send in the form at the end of the Journal if you wish to pay the student fee instead of selling. Chocolate bars will be sent home on Friday Sep 9th.logo.stacked.gif

Transportation:  We encourage all families to sign up for a free service called Remind. To receive bus fan out messages via text,  text @icsbus to (226) 774-0016, or send an email to icsbus@mail.remind.com. You can opt-out of messages at anytime by replying, ‘unsubscribe@icsbus’ or reply with ‘unsubscribe” in the subject line. We sent out a test message on Remind this morning. If you did not receive one and you think you should, please let the office know.

Fog Delays/Cancellation: Our policy aims to avoid bus delays. Our policy also considers both student and staff safety in traveling to school in inclement weather.  Snow creates potentially dangerous road surface conditions, which impact both buses and teachers.  Fog creates reduced visibility, which impacts students getting on and off buses safely. Fog, while causing delays and requiring slower speeds and increased attention, is not seen to create the same driving risks as snow. In inclement weather situations, our delays or cancellations will be guided by decisions for East Elgin Secondary, as posted on www.mybigyellowbus.ca:
a) TVDSB snow cancellation = ICS bus cancellation, ICS closed
b) TVDSB snow delay = ICS bus cancellation, ICS closed
c) TVDSB fog cancellation = ICS bus cancellation, ICS closed
d) TVDSB fog delay = ICS AM bus cancellation, ICS open, PM buses run normally
We also update our Twitter feed and the Easy101 website.
Bus Routes: We have had a few changes to the original bus routes. If there are any parents with questions please contact our route coordinator Jeff Vannoord at 519-520-0943 or the transportation board rep Dean Mantel at 519-282-3115.

Private Music lessons at ICS:  Not every school is blessed with 6 experienced musicians interested in providing music lessons during the school day!  These teachers are not part of the ICS staff; we simply make a room available to them.  These teachers take students from their classrooms to have private lessons right at school.  If you would like to make arrangements for private lessons at school, contact the teacher:

GRADE 7 and 8 – Mr. Bierman (p.bierman@immanuelchristianschool.net)
Welcome back to school everyone!  I look forward to working with you, discovering with you, worshipping with you, and getting to know you this year. Here’s a look at what is going on in the senior end to start the year…
Integrated Studies: Discover- Develop- Deploy: Spiritual Gifts! In support this year’s theme as well as the ICS Vision and Mission we will begin to understand what the Bible says about Spiritual gifts and throughout the year we plan to continue the study. We will begin to consider how we can steward the gifts the Lord has entrusted to us for His glory in and through the school and community.  By term 3 we plan to put our gifts into practice to serve the Aylmer community in a tangible way. Parents, students will take the youth version of the test found at: http://www.spiritualgiftstest.com/. There is an adult version of the test.  Give it a try; compare and discuss your results with your kids. It’s a great conversation idea for around the dinner table!
Bible: Soon, we will explore the Book of Proverbs. Students will be responsible for reading through the whole book and keeping up a Journal where they will respond with personalized entries about specific proverbs which inspire or challenge them.
Memory Work: Written reflection on theme (Matthew 4:18-22): Due Monday, September 12.
The memory work for the next couple weeks will be individualized verses which come from the student’s results of their Spiritual Gift Survey. The remaining Memory Work for term 1 will come from Proverbs and/or from other texts which support the words of wisdom we will encounter there.
Mathematics: Students will start the year taking diagnostic tests to help me determine the best strategies to help each student develop in this area.  Following this we will begin a Numbers unit on chapters 11,3,5.
Science:  We will study the basic yet complex unit of life - cells.  Students will have opportunity to appreciate the importance of cells to living organisms as they conduct hands on activities using microscopes. There will be a science fair this year after Spring Break.  Students will be encouraged to begin to consider this already in September.
Humanities: Students will fine-tune and upgrade their cartographic skills during the first couple of weeks.  Afterwards they will have opportunity to practice their knowledge as they explore the Rainforest Biome.
Language Arts: In addition to regular spelling and vocab assignments throughout the year, students will digest and respond to some short stories.
