From the Principal’s Desk:

Where we’re at affects how we see. Today at chapel we talked about the third advent candle of Joy. As examples, I used two different reactions to the news of Jesus’ birth. The angels spoke to the shepherds of good news causing great joy. Yet, when the wise men spoke of the same news, all Jerusalem was disturbed. As a Christian school, we declare that the name of Jesus is good news. The certainty of that affects us far beyond our school years and gives us a life-giving perspective on all of this world!

Mark your calendar! - The ICS Christmas Celebration of Art & Music will take place on Wednesday December 20th. Matinee at 9:00am and evening performance at 7:00pm. Come join us as we unwrap the “pieces of the nativity” with Jesus being the best present of all
Yours in Christian education, Keith Cameron, Principal and Chief Operating Officer
Each week, during staff devotions we join in prayer for our parents and staff members. We invite you to do so as well.
Praying for our parents: Please pray for Chad & Amanda Lapadat as well as Abe & Leona Loewen.
Praying for our staff: Please pray for our Gr 1/2 Teacher Ms. Marianne Pieters.
We are regretfully saying farewell to the Lockyer family, Andrew and Keli-Lyn, as Danielle transfers to McGregor Public and Aryanna transfers to Davenport. Please let them know they remain in our thoughts and prayers even as they step out of our Christian education community.

Jump into Kindergarten! We have attached two postcards to this week's Journal for our upcoming Jump into Kindergarten days. Children entering JK & SK are invited to experience the Kindergarten classroom at ICS. Children can enjoy the morning leaning letters, shapes, and numbers in a Christian setting. New families to ICS are welcome to attend 2 mornings and existing families may attend 1 morning. The program runs Feb 6, 8, 27th & March 1st from 8:30-11:30am. Please share with anyone who might be interested. Call to reserve a spot!

New Family Information Night: The new year will start our 2018 registration season. Our New Student/Family Information evening will be held on Friday Jan 19th at 7:00pm. We feel strongly that many of our prospective parents are attending churches in our local area. Advertising in our local churches is very important. We will be sending home an advertising poster and postcards for our Jump into Kindergarten program for selected families (church ambassadors). If your family has received one and it’s alright with your church, we ask that you please post it in your church right after Christmas in time for the first Sunday of 2018. Do you know any families interested in ICS? Invite them, and let the office know!

If you have chosen a story from home please bring the book(s) to school for approval. Please ensure that the story is not a rhyming story. Stories should be 3 to 5 minutes long. Grade 1 Math: Focus is on numbers to 20
  • Relate numbers from 11 to 19 to a ten and ones
  • Add and subtract within 20 using various strategies as well as the rekenrek
Make ten by splitting up one of the numbers
                     8 + 5 = 10 + 3 = 13
                           ^
                         2  3
Subtract the ones from the ones
                     18 - 6 = 10 + 2 = 12
                      ^
                   10  8
  • Practice facts using Live Math in Mathletics Program

Chickens have arrived! This morning we were stretching our mathematical thinking to understand Elaina Kroondyk’s show and tell.
Yesterday Elaina said that a big truck delivered 2,000 chickens to their farm. Elaina said there were 60 chickens in one tall rolling cage and that there were 6 chickens in small cages inside the big rolling cage.  So all the grade 1 and 2 mathematicians started counting by 6 and then by 60 to figure out how many cages there were. We saw how amazing God’s world of number patterns worked once again.
Pattern - 6, 2, 8, 4, 0 continued throughout our counting.
Grade 2 Math: Subtraction with regrouping continues to be a challenging concept for many of the students. We are wrapping up our addition and subtraction unit early next week. Students, keep practicing your math facts and your regrouping by using Mathletics at home! Can you show your parents how we solve 500-78?

Basketball Tournament Concession.  We’re looking forward to our senior basketball tournament on Tue 30 Jan at LDCSS! In addition to the tournament play, our 7/8 class has the opportunity to run the concession stand. The proceeds from the stand will go to offsetting the costs of our end of the year class trip.  Participation is not mandatory, but is encouraged. The profits will be divided equally among the participants. We’re looking for a few parent volunteers to head up the concession - without volunteers, we will not be able to direct the profits towards the 7/8 class. Please let Mr Bierman or Mr Cameron know if you can help!
